Independence Day!

July 4, 2007 Denver to Colorado Springs, CO

Since we had stayed at such a nice hotel in Denver, it was very difficult to get myself out of bed in the morning. Nevertheless, I got up for another day on the Journey of Hope. Breakfast was brought to us by the parents of Chad Small, a team member on JOH. The ride to Colorado Springs was pretty difficult because in the past few days, we had done a couple of 50 milers, had a day off, and done a 30 miler. So this 80 mile day seemed like it was really long. The hills didn't help but it was cool to ride with THE Bruce Rogers. Bruce Rogers was the person who rode the Journey of Hope for the first time, by himself, in 1987. It was just awesome to chat with him and pick his brain about the history of the ride and his time as a Pi Kapp.

When we finally finished the ride, we met up with some ParaOlympic athletes to ride into the Olympic Training Center with. These athletes all had physical disabilities (from missing arms and legs to birth defects to nerve problems) and were training for their Olympic games. We got to eat lunch with them in the Olympic Training Center's cafeteria which looked as amazing inside as the food was good. I ate lunch with Kelly whose right hand had a deformation. She was really fun to talk to and had a great laugh. I think that we all enjoyed lunch with these amazing people and athletes.

We ate inside because it had begun pouring down rain. Well, the rain continued and so we decided to skip out on the Colorado Rockies game and 4th of July fireworks. This was a bummer because I was really looking forward to this but oh well, there will be other chances to see fireworks in the future. A group of us went and saw Transformers in the evening since our plans had been changed. It was alright, I thought it was pretty corny, but still entertaining. This was the second movie in a row that I saw in theaters in which I fell asleep toward the end. I just can't help it when I'm in a dark room with something remotely comfortable to sit in. Fun fact, it only cost $5.50 to see the movie!
