A strong wind ablowin

July 8, 2007 La Junta to Lamar, CO

Once again, not a very long ride! Today's ride included a ride-along from our Community Relations crew member. Once again, not much of a cyclist but he really held his own.

The most entertaining part of the ride had to have been the Great Grasshopper Massacre of 2007 which occurred on this day in history. Grasshoppers, crickets or locusts, and even frogs lined our shoulder on the highway. Many lives were lost. When time for dinner came, we were taken to the home of a tri-athlete who wanted to sponsor us. He has no affiliation with the fraternity, him and his family just think that riding our bikes across the country is cool I guess. It was pretty much hang out and watch TV there. After dinner, we made another visit to our new favorite getaway, Sonic.

As we were outside waiting on our orders, we found ourselves amid a wind storm. As dirt flew into our eyes and spoons, straws, and receipts were blown away, we maintained our position and eventually got all of our orders. We headed back to our gym for the night which had bugs in it and the floor was really dusty. It was hard to sleep because I felt like bugs were all over me...

Here's a picture Todd Wright took of a grasshopper eating the head of another one.
